I went a little nuts in the grocery store yesterday

I went a little nuts in the grocery store yesterday.

Usually I buy Weight Watchers meals to eat at lunch. They are quick; you can heat them up in less than five minutes in the microwave. The are relatively inexpensive; you can get them on sale for $1.99 each or normally they are about $2.50-$3.35. And they are pretty tasty.

The only downside to them is that when I eat one, I’m usually hungry again by about 4:00 or 4:30.

So, I had an appointment at 1:30 today. (I’ll rant another time about people who call and make appointments and don’t show up.) I decided about noon to run to the grocery store to buy the Weight Watchers meals I’d forgotten to buy over the weekend.

It seemed like a good plan.

I got to the grocery store and picked out five meals. Some were Weight Watchers and some were Lean Cuisine. Lean Cuisine has those sandwiches that really are tasty for a frozen meal. Unfortunately, Homeland didn’t have any of those.

And I thought, “some popcorn would be nice.” So I went looking for microwave popcorn.

And then I thought some chips would be nice. And I picked up some Nacho Chesse Flavored Doritos.

And then I thought a sandwich would be good. So I bought a loaf of bread. And since I was in the bread aisle, I grabbed a package of powdered sugar covered donuts.

And then since I had to get something to go on the bread, I snagged a small milk as I went buy the milk case.

And then I ended up in the canned meat aisle. We’ve been eating a lot of Hormel canned white chicken. So much of what the BoyChild can, or more importantly will, eat is carbs. We really struggle to get him to eat protein. Cheese use to be his protein of choice but that’s out now. Hence, the run on canned chicken. And while there, instead of relatively healthy plain canned chicken or tuna, I grabbed some Underwood Deviled Ham. I don’t know what made me do it. Maybe it was the preservatives, the nitrates, the artifical colors. I suppose it could have been worse, I could have snagged some Spam.

Do you see a pattern emerging here? All this stuff is NOT gluten-free, dairy free, corn free and Feingold friendly.

Since the BoyChild has been eating like this, we’ve all pretty much been eating this way. At least when the BoyChild is around. Occasionally we’ll feed him and after we put him to bed order some chicken nachos or a pizza but for the most part we all eat healthy, gluten-free, dairy free and Feingold friendly foods.

The BoyChild is so self-sufficient that we really can’t have food in the house that he can’t have. Most of it we’ve replaced with things he can have; rice milk or gluten free bread or rice cracker instead of Braum’s milk, Wonder Bread and Zestas. Not exactly the same thing, but it’s the best we can do and the kids seem to like them.

And while everyone has been a trooper about it, there has been more than a little whining from all fronts except the BoyChild. The BoyChild has taken it very stoically and asks, “can I eat that?” or says, “When I’m not allergic anymore, I’m gonna have that” when a commercial for something he likes comes on television.

Bread and milk are two things that we’ve all missed. I’m not really much of a bread eater and I didn’t realize how much I’ve missed real bread until today when I was in the store and thought, “oh I’d like to have some white bread.”

I’ve not done too badly. I mean when I’m away from the BoyChild I tend to eat like a normal person. But I don’t eat lunch out a whole lot and I don’t sprint to the grocery store or the 7-11 as soon as I drop the BoyChild off and buy the forbidden foods.

Recently I was making fun of the Huz. He spends far more time with the BoyChild than do I. Often he does sprint to the Homeland looking for Little Debbie Snack Cakes and a Pepsi as soon as the BoyChild is out of sight. Gotta have that junk food fix.

But I’ve been trying. Until I hit the grocery store today. I felt like that Robin Williams movie, Moscow on the Hudson, where he is a Russian immigrant and goes into the grocery store for the first time and goes ape shit nuts.

Now to get back on that gluten free, dairy free, corn free Feingold Friendly wagon. Last night we had entirley fried foods for dinner.

Doesn’t get any better than that, huh?

I’ve had grocery store runs like that before. The “hangover” can be brutal, but it’s fun while it lasts! ;)
