You hear that sucking sound?

September 13th, 2006 · 5 Comments · Family Life, Shopping

That’s my house, sucking the life right out of me.

Today the dishwasher went out. I don’t know what’s wrong with it. My guess is that it’s just old. The Husband said he loaded it, started it, and went back in a little later to a puddle of water in our kitchen floor.

Trying to look for the bright side here…hhhhmmmm….uh….we needed to mop the floor, anyway?

This summer the handle to the microwave broke off. The Husband put a cabinet handle on the microwave. I’ll admit it works pretty well. It has also put off the horrible task of going and looking at appliances and going to the library to see what Consumer Reports says about the various microwaves and traveling all over town to look at every single microwave in our price range. And then debate the relative merits of the store that has a lower sales tax vs. the store that will install and deliver for free.

You see The Husband and I can’t just go buy a damned microwave, it somehow always turns into a project. Sort of like the cabinet handle he put on the microwave? It wasn’t on the cabinet because we bought it but didn’t measure closely enough and the new handles didn’t fit the holes in our cabinets. I put the bag of handles on the back counter. I was thinking, stupidly I know, that I would take them back to that mega super store we bought them from. But it took us FOREVER to pick handles that we could both agree upon and that we could afford. We went to Lowe’s, Ace and two Home Depots in town. The thought of going and looking at EVERY.SINGLE.CABINET.HANDLE. at Home Depot again made me want to poke forks in my eyes and pull my hair out by the roots.

It would also require we find a babysitter, or someplace to dump the kids. They simply do not have the patience for it and someone would end up screaming and throwing themselves on the floor and crying. I couldn’t guarantee it would be one of the kids.

And then the GirlChild decided she needed one for some project at school. And then the BoyChild decided he needed one or eight. And then I got up to go to the bathroom and stepped on one which promptly went into the trash. And suddenly I have a receipt dated a year a go for ten cabinet handles and three drawer pulls (yeah we’ve got no cabinet space in my kitchen) and I have one drawer pull and two handles.

But the dishwasher may motivate me. To begin that awful process of replacing.an.appliance. Cause Oh My God it will turn into a nightmare before it’s over.

The Husband will have to find the CR magazine that last studied Dishwasher’s like they were the atomic bomb. And then we’ll have to decide the features that mean the most to US. And then we’ll have to locate the places that have the dishwashers with those features in our town or any surrounding hamlets within a reasonable driving distance. Well. You get the idea.

I’m looking around now to wonder, What else can go wrong? Cause I simply cannot buy two major appliances in one year. And that handle on the microwave is beginning to look awful shakey.

I can’t tell you how many things we’ve bought that turned out to be the wrong style or size or whatever that we meant to return but didn’t. I bet I could open a store with all of it. Goodluck with your dishwasher search!

    I understand your woes.
We, or I, research EVERY major (and minor) purchase. It is a pain in the ass, but I feel better when I check everything out.

    Good luck!

Ugh, do I ever know your pain. The research, the project, the kids screaming in public while they wait for a damned appliance decision. AAAGGGHH!!!

I hope the dishwasher purchase goes better than most, though…

I have two entire pantry shelves of parts, pieces, and paint colors that, for whatever reason, didn’t work.

Why is it so hard to bring things back?

[…] The positive side of this little incident? I will mark ASKO off my list of dishwashers to consider when I finally get the energy to go look at them. […]
