I have a secret

June 30th, 2005 · 2 Comments · Family Life

I have a secret. A deep, dark little secret.

Recently my office got cubicles for the huge cavernous area in the center of the office. I really like them and encouraged them to buy them. They are a little Dilbert-esque looking; about head high, an inoffensive off white color, cloth of some variety on the walls. But it breaks the space up out there and makes it seem like it’s larger in a way it didn’t when it was just a wide open space.

Since The Husband has been coming in the office three days a week or so to help me, we’ve taken over one of the cubicles. We have a plant on a shelf. We have moved my desktop computer out there. We’ve set up my lap top so I can use it in my office and then take it in when I meet with clients to look stuff up.

It’s a comfortable little space.

And.

I like it!

At first I thought I liked it because I had the desktop set up the way I wanted. I had all the software loaded on it. I had all the settings set just they way I liked them. I’ve been struggling to get the laptop set up and all the software installed and all that icky stuff you have to do when you get a new computer.

I’ve been sitting out there working off and on all week. I finally admitted to myself I was out there because I liked it because it really isn’t that convenient for me.

I’m a little embarrassed to admit I like it. I mean I’m a high paid, high power lawyer. Yeah, O.K. I’ll wait while you laugh. I would have been insulted if someone has suggested I should get a cubicle instead of an office. Something without any walls or doors, something I could shut to do all the high powered crap I do. And some place to hang my diplomas and licenses upon.

But the cubicle seems friendly somehow. It doesn’t have any windows, but it has a sky light that spotlights natural light on the desk. It has a large workspace where I can spread my important crap out to work on. It’s got a phone, so I can have important conversations with important people if I’m so inclined.

So. I have a secret. I’m a secret cubicle coveter.

I love this post. For no tangible reason. And I love that YOU love your cubicle.

I think you clued in to why you like it so much in that last paragraph: natural indirect light. It just makes me happy thinking about it.

I have none of those happy things at work: no office, no cube, no natural light. I am not a happy camper.

Besides, high profile super power lawyers can do whatevah they please. Everyone else can stick it.
