Trying Something New

Tomorrow is the beginning of a new month.   I have decided that we will eat something different for dinner every night next month.  And I will report here what we had and how it was.

We’ve gotten into some kind of food rut.  We eat the same thing.  Over.  And over.  And over  again.  Until one of us says, “man, I’m sick of this, let’s not have it anymore.”

This will be a challenge on so many different levels.

David, while he eats pretty much whatever (and he will deny it vehemently)  is a meat, bread and potatoes man.  Chicken fried steak with fried potatoes and cream gravy and bread would be his ideal meal.  It is also one he, or I, rarely ever cook.

We don’t eat enough variety in veggies.  Broccoli is about the only veggie that we eat with any regularity unless we hide it in something else.  I don’t think there is anyway we’ll be able to not eat the same vegetable dishes during the month but I’m going to try to get together 10 or so that we like and rotate them in and out.  And yes, I do consider mushrooms and onions veggies, so if a recipe has those in it, we may not have a separate veggie dish.

The BoyChild would live on microwave Mac & Cheese, Reeses Peanut Butter Cups and cereal.  He’s a picky eater.  He doesn’t like anything that has anything in it; for instance this recipe, he makes us pick out the onions and the pimentos before he will separate the spaghetti and the chicken and eat them separately.   And he barely eats enough of anything to keep a bird alive.

My little family of three (which is really like 2.25 when you consider how little the BoyChild eats) often has to reduce recipes so that we aren’t overwhelmed by leftovers.  That’s gonna be interesting.

I’m going to borrow liberally from the Pioneer Woman Cooks.   She is my people.   Her use of bagged cheddar cheese and cream of mushroom soup is genius.  She has some really great recipes on her site.  She’s got some veggies I think we might like.  And she’s got a lot of red meat there.

I’m going to report here what we are eating for dinner.   Yikes!  Opening our eating habits up to the internets to critique!

I won’t include breakfasts or lunches.  The BoyChild eats most of his lunches at school.  I eat left-overs or those Lean Cuisine Panine Sandwiches (they are really good) and I don’t really have any idea what David eats for lunch most days.

I probably won’t include desserts though I may report on them when I actually make them.

I’ll post any recipes for you that come from my little pink recipe box.  I’ll link to any I get off the Internets.

We eat out entirely too much.  I know that.  I don’t know whether this will cut down on the amount we eat out, but it can’t hurt.
