Toothbrushes in the Dishwasher

November 17th, 2008 · 8 Comments · Family Life

Does anyone else put toothbrushes in the dishwasher?

My little family of four shares one bathroom.  Yeah.  I know.  It’s one of the many downsides to an 80 year old house.

Our toothbrushes are in a cup sitting by the sink.  I try to remember during this time of cold and flu to stick them in the dishwasher frequently.  Cause it strikes me that bathrooms in general and tooth brushes in particular are a place for germs to hide.

David goes along with me.  But I definately get the feeling he thinks I’m nuts to do this.

I understand that we need to replace them ever month or so.  And I try to keep enough on hand that we can do that.  But I throw them in the dishwasher to kill any lingering germs.

For instance, the GirlChild has come down with some sinus, congestion, sore throat, cough thing.  She came down with it this weekend.  Last night I threw all the tooth brushes in the dishwasher before we started it for the night.  I’m hoping, and taking my multi-vitamins and my vitamin C that it will keep the rest of us from getting it.

So, do any of y’all wash your toothbrushes in the dishwasher?

We do put our toothbrushes through the dishwasher but we do allow them to soak in Listerine at least once a week … in separate cups of course.

    Oooohhhh. What a good idea.

I’ve never done that. I’ve always thought they would melt in the dishwasher. We have an Oral B electric toothbrush so that takes it to a whole other level…so I don’t think I’ll be doing this. But the listerine is a great idea!

I have never heard of that in my life, butI kind of like the idea. I like the Listerine idea too.

never run them through the dishwasher as we do not have one… but I have boiled them in a pot on the stove. Usually I just buy a new one

So your toothbrushes don’t taste like funk? soap, etc.?

mmm-hmmm, yes. love to put toothbrushes in the DW . . . and . . . sponges should go in there from time to time, too.

Hmmm. Wouldn’t use a fork, rinse it, put it on the side of the sink to use at the next meal, would you? In restaurants, doesn’t silverware need to be washed at a certain temperature to be compliant with safety regulations? Why should icky toothbrushes be treated any differently?
