The Right Thing to Do?

February 18th, 2008 · 6 Comments · Allergies, The BoyChild

Last week we took the BoyChild to see his pediatrician. His doctor is a not the kindly, older, skinny neck-tie wearing man I had for a doctor when I was a child. His doctor is a kind, hip, youngish man with a goatee. He wears sweater vests and blue jeans.

We have changed the BoyChild’s diet. He does not eat any artificial flavors, colorings or sweeteners. He does not eat any wheat, dairy, corn, soy, beef or tomatoes. He gets allergy shots twice a week for his environmental and food allergies. He takes amino acid supplements, probiotics, 100 mg of hypoallergenic vitamin C, omega 3 fatty acids and a hypoallergenic multi-vitamin. Feeding him at home is hard. Taking him out to eat is near impossible.

The BoyChild has behavior problems. He talks inappropriately. He yells. He hits. He throws things. He is uncooperative. He is belligerent. He has tantrums. At night he grinds his teeth and lifts his head up and bangs it on his pillow. Some nights it is worse than others.

He is also smart and kind and gentle. He has a shy smile that is a heartbreaker. He has a sense of humor and loves to laugh. He loves to read and snuggle in bed before he sleeps. I read to him and then he reads to me.

This week we got a prescription for an ADHD drug. He’s begun having more difficulty in school lately. Despite the occupational therapy and the diet modifications, since Christmas, he’s had more trouble keeping his hands to himself, holding himself together and doing what is asked of him.

So after much soul searching, hard work and effort, we’ve decided to try the drugs.

We decided it was time.

And still I worry whether it is the right thing to do.

These kinds of decisions are so hard. As a mother, think you just have to trust your gut and do what you think is best for your child. Good luck. I’ll cross my fingers for both of you.

I have never wished so hard that this (or something!) would be the answer like turning a switch.

I hope this brings BC some peace.

hang tight, this is a tool that you are trying out and that you are respecting as a tool and that you are not picking up lightly.

I wish you all the luck.

You’re doing what you think is best for your child, out of love. Which is all that matters. And you aren’t taking it lightly, like its just going to be an on-off switch.

    Goodluck.

You’re obviously a very conscientious and loving mother, and I can tell you’ve given this a lot of thought. Sometimes medication is just necessary. Let us know how it goes. I’m keeping you and your darling boy in my thoughts. *hug*

(Do you have other moms with a similar situation to touch base with?)
