I Remember When Going to the Grocery Store Was Fun

June 25th, 2007 · 1 Comment · Family Life

Yesterday I went to the grocery store.

I remember when going to the grocery store didn’t make me want to cry.

The BoyChild was kind of edgy yesterday so I didn’t take him with me. That, in and of itself, made me kind of sad. As much as I complain about taking the BoyChild shopping. And as crazy as it sometimes makes me, I enjoy talking to him and being with him. I miss him when he’s not there.

I went through the store reading labels. Bread and crackers all have wheat and dairy. Ditto with most chips. Cheese is out. Cereal has wheat in it. And since we don’t drink any milk anymore, cereal is kinda yucky anyway. Most pasta is made with wheat. Even if it’s made with soy or rice, then the question arises “what are you going to eat on it?”

I thought I’d scored on some nutrition bars. They are made by a company called Luna, contain no wheat and “traces” of dairy, are all organic and are made for women. More importantly, they taste good. Unfortunately, they are made from green tea. Which is a Stage Two in Feingold. And I think may be one of the things that sets the BoyChild off. Not the tea per se but the tea is a natural salicylate.

I bought meat; roast, pork chops, chicken. I bought potatoes, broccoli, onions. I bought bananas, lemons, limes and pineapple.

The menu for this week includes:

Pot Roast

Stew

Greek baked Chicken with potatoes

Pork Chops

Bacon and eggs

I bought some rice cakes which are good with peanut butter. I make him waffles that he can have for breakfast all week. The waffles are also pretty good with peanut butter and honey on them. I will make some popcorn that he will eat for a snacks.

I guess all and all he’s not eating too badly. But he asked me recently when he could have macaroni and cheese. And he’s not talking about thick and creamy tasty homemade mac and cheese. He’s talking about right out of the box into the microwave mac and cheese. I told him I didn’t know.

Friday I have an appointment with a nutritionist.  I’m not sure exactly what she’s going to do.  When I started on this, I didn’t know what I was going to feed him and needed help figuring that out.  Since it’s taken so long to get in to see a nutritionist, I’ve pretty much figured out what I’m going to feed him.  Now, I’m not sure if he’s getting everything he needs.

I did score some nutrition bars, which he can eat, at the Natural Food Store.  And as these things go, they aren’t too expensive.  And more importantly, he likes them!

Aw man – food sensitivities/allergies suck! Poor you! That being said, after reading your menu for the week, I’m coming to your house for dinner! Yummy!
