The medicines in our lives

December 22nd, 2005 · 1 Comment · Weirdness

We are getting ready to go on vacation next week.

We’ll get up about 3:30 a.m on December 26 and be on the road by about 4:00. The kids sleep most of the way. That gets us into Galveston by about noon. The husband and I can take a nap in the afternoon while someone else watches our kids and not be too zoned out to be social.

I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve not been away from the office, or really anywhere for that matter, for more than a few days since we were in Galveston LAST Christmas.

Anyway, I’m trying to think of the things we need and make lists of what we need on a daily basis. Toothpaste, shampoo, medicines. I consider us all to be pretty healthy but it kind of boggles my mind how many different kinds and varieties of medicines and drugs it takes to get us out of the house and through the day. And these aren’t even really good drugs that make everyone happy all the time.

The BoyChild takes Zyrtec every morning. He also takes Benedryl and Guaifenesin at night before bed. I also put Mary Kay Extra Emollient Night Cream on his face where his cheeks have gotten chapped from the runny nose and on the spots on his body where he has extra dry skin. So that’s four different bottles of medicines that he needs.

The Husband takes his blood pressure medicine. That’s five.

I also bring along for good measure our Allegra which the GirlChild and I need for our allergies act up. That’s six.

I have Ambian for those nights when I can’t sleep. That’s seven.

And then we have Children’s vitamins and my vitamin C and vitamin B Complex. That’s eleven.

Ten different kinds of medicines just to get it through the day! And we are healthy people.

And that doesn’t include the stuff I’ll probably bring along just for good measure.

Children’s Motrin. Nothing knocks a fever out better. And you don’t want to have to run to the store at midnight and that’s invariably when a kids fever strikes.

Aspirin. Did I mention we will be staying in a house with my Father, Step-Mother, Aunt, her son/my cousin, at least one of my brothers and his wife and maybe both my brothers and both their wives, my husband and our two kids, the monster boy and the drama queen and maybe a child or two with one of my brothers that stays with them? The aspirin will be in great demand.

Also, there will be lots of liquor. With that many people in a confined space I’ll need the liquor. The aspirin will come in handy when I’ve had too much liquor because there are too many people in the house.

Tums. Did I mention who all will be staying in this house?

So we are already up to one small bag, just for the medicines everyone needs.

I don’t even want to think about the power cords we’ll need for all our electronic equipment!

Ciao,

M&Co.

It’s scary when you suddenly start counting the number of pharmaceuticals you need for a family your size, isn’t it? I want me some of them happy pills!
